Blechnum, L. Sp. Pl. 2: 1077 (1753) Gen Pl. 5th edn, 485 (1754); from Greek 'blekhnon', the name of a fern. 200 or so species, medium to large ferns, found mainly in the Southern hemisphere tropics and temperate regions. 

Habitat - wet mountain forest, swamps, thickets. In tropics grows in lowland rain forests, cloud forests and ravines, streambanks and rivers; creeping, erect or trunk forming rhizome.

Very common in the mountain bush and scrub in the region where I grew up.
